Birth Centre Closes At Local Hospital

The Aveta birth centre at Cheltenham General Hospital has been temporarily closed.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said it had been a difficult decision to make.

The closure, which came into effect on January 18th, will allow the trust to provide ongoing essential care for non-Covid patients.

This includes patients having treatment for cancer.

But the trust stresses there are no plans to permanently close the birth centre.

The centre will be closed initially for a 4 week period but potentially up to 8 weeks if the pressures on the local hospitals do not ease in the next month.

All mums-to-be with planned births at the centre will be offered alternatives.
